Prima Marketing Watercolor Confections: Tropicals

When you start out with watercolors and are new to plein air or outdoor painting, the first question you have is which colors to use. In India, the most common colors are Camlin Artists Watercolors. However, I’d suggest either opting for Camlin Artists Watercolors tubes or spending some money and buying a watercolor pan with richer pigments.

Description of Prima Marketing Watercolor Confections: Tropicals

Prima Marketing Watercolor Confections: Tropicals is a metal watercolor box with 12 colors. With intense colors and a great box, it is worth the money. These colors are great for scrapbooking, travel sketching, urban sketching, and pen and wash technique.

Prima Marketing also offers other watercolor sets in the classic ‘little black box’ finish, namely Odyssey, Shimmering Lights, Woodlands, and Decadent Pies. You can go through their website and Instagram page to get an idea of the shades in these boxes. I found the Tropicals set to have the most balanced combination of colors for nature and urban sketching. The colors in this set are more intense and less opaque compared to the others.

The color names are:

14 Plantain (Yellow Ochre)
21 Sunset (Hansa Yellow)
17 Sunset (Orange)
19 Red Parrot (Quin Rose)
22 Lush (Quin Magenta)
25 Cacao (Burnt Umber)
16 Avocado (Yellow Green)
18 Rain Forest (Phthalo Green Dark)
13 Grassland (Phthalo Green)
15 Thunderstorm (Probably Cobalt Blue)
23 Wild Berry (Probably French Ultramarine)
20 North Isle (Purple)

Advantages of Prima Marketing Watercolor Confections: Tropicals

  • The tiny mental box fits into small bags and is easy to hold while sketching outdoors.
  • You’ll also have space in the box to fit in a tiny brush pen or add some extra pans to build your range of colors.
  • There are three shades of green and two blues.
  • An intense purple that you can use for creating blacks.
  • The colors do not granulate and have nice transparency.

Limitation of Prima Marketing Watercolor Confections: Tropicals

However, Prima Marketing does not offer any information about pigment content, lightfastness, or toxicity. And, while they call these Artist grade paints,  I’d suggest Mission Gold tubes for serious watercolors meant for sale or exhibition. It is also a good idea to buy some empty pans and add in Mission Gold shades to your Watercolor Confections: Tropicals pan.

Conclusion

Prima Marketing Watercolor Confections: Tropicals
A lovely compact paint box for travel sketching.

I’d recommend buying the Marketing Watercolor Confections: Tropicals for use in urban sketching and travel sketching. Watch out for discounts. And once you have gone through the colors, you can fill in the pans from watercolor tubes.
